County set to sell Arnold Plaza to Jerry Ambrose Veterans Council

Mohave Valley Daily News - 1/14/2018

KINGMAN - Mohave County on Tuesday will look to complete the sale of Arnold Plaza in downtown Kingman, which once housed several county departments.

Mohave County supervisors will discuss the sale of the two properties and the building to the Jerry Ambrose Veterans Council for $58,500. The property amounts to about 0.72 acres.

The supervisors voted in August to sell the building to JAVC for use as a shelter to help homeless veterans. The JAVC said it will help veterans in the transition from military to civilian life.

A recently completely abatement project removed asbestos and lead-based paint from the building. Grant funding up to $120,867 was accepted for the project. Other grant funding also will be available for removal of asbestos material in the roof.

Arnold Plaza once housed several county departments including the treasurer, recorder and assessor's offices and the elections department. The building has sat abandoned since October 2005 when those departments moved into the current administration building.

The county has tried several times to auction off the property without success. In 2007, the neighboring Catholic church offered to buy the 22,400-square-foot building for $300,000 but supervisors at the time rejected the offer. The property was appraised at that time at $510,000.

The 31,000-square-foot property was first occupied in 1898 by an ore-sampling company. In 1910, it was occupied by an insurance company and the Elks Club. Six years later, it housed a bakery and other business offices. The Veterans of Foreign Wars also occupied a building on the site in 1948.

Arnold Plaza was built in 1963 and initially housed a title company, a doctor's office, a construction firm, a bank and other businesses. The county bought the property almost 30 years ago. It was last remodeled in 1992.

The supervisors will meet at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, due to the Martin Luther King holiday on Monday, at the county administration building, 700 W. Beale St. in Kingman.
