Mental Health Services puts on a show

Appeal-Democrat (Marysville, CA) - 10/23/2014

Oct. 23--A group of local residents will take to the stage Friday for what, to them, will be a whole lot more than a night of entertainment.

"It takes a lot of courage to get up there on stage," said Janice King, intervention coordinator with Sutter-Yuba Mental Health Services.

She started "Great Performances" 20 years ago to create an opportunity to help build her clients' confidence.

"It's inspiring to see people who aren't good working with a crowd get up and perform and then they get appreciation from the audience," said Jose Feliciano, who has performed at the event for the last few years.

Feliciano, who runs the Rising Sun Martial Arts, will have people from the studio perform various acts.

"It's important to shine a light on mental health and build awareness," said Feliciano.

In all, about 20 acts of singing, dancing, music and poetry will be part of the event. The acts will include clients of the Yuba City facility as well as counselors, staff and people from the community.

Eugene Mayo, who works at Sutter-Yuba Mental Health Services, often dresses up as a clown or Charlie Chaplin to entertain his clients. This year, he'll be Hair Bear the Clown riding on a mini bicycle for the show.

Proceeds from the event will fund Mental Health America programs.
